Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (DIT) – formerly known as the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET)
The Department for Education (DfE) has published an update to the framework for the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills), effective 31 March 2025. This update replaces elements of the Education and Training Framework.
Introduction
If it's QTLS status that you're after, this is the right place. You will be eligible upon completion of this L5 Diploma.
As you progress through the Diploma, you'll learn the basics of teaching as well as more advanced concepts such as inclusive pedagogy, assessment, and curriculum design.

Where will this course lead?
If you are looking to teach students in the further education sector, the Level 5 DiT will qualify you to teach at any further education organisation, including colleges, workplace, offender learning, alternative training providers and even sixth form.
This OFQUAL regulated Diploma combines online learning with practical application.
Creating learning settings that promote your students' development is a key skill for becoming an effective teacher. To help you develop your professional practice, this course integrates current pedagogical theories and practices with hands-on digital skills.
What will I study?
This qualification consists of seven units.
Unit 1: Teaching my subject
Unit 2: Learners and learning
Unit 3: Teachers and teaching
Unit 4: Professional Practice Portfolio
Unit 5: Effective digital and online pedagogies
Unit 6: Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area
Unit 7: Action Research
How will this course be delivered and what is the duration?
Following enrolment onto the course, you will be contacted by your personal tutor, who will arrange an initial online meeting to introduce you to the course, it's structure and how to navigate our user friendly learning platform with ease.
During this meeting you will have the opportunity to ask any questions about the course, we will be happy guide you and answer your queries.
From then on, you have the option to arrange monthly online meetings with your tutor at mutually convenient times, or as and when you feel you need more support.
The content is delivered via structured videos with all questions and interactive learning activities included. These lessons cover all knowledge content and the performance evidence requirements.
Course Duration: 6 - 12 months
What qualifications will I get?
Level 5: Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills)
Additionally, you will be eligible to apply to the QTLS programme upon completion. You can find more information about this on the Society for Education and Training website. Should you wish to continue onto the QTLS programme, we will support you throughout the process. (Usually six months)
Teaching Practice – face-to-face
If you are not currently working in education, you would need to find a placement at an educational organisation in order to satisfy the face-to-face teaching practice requirement of the qualification.
One option is offer to teach on a voluntary basis, where an organisation will allow you to teach and complete your qualification whilst on your placement. You can use two different placements if you want to.
Additional Requirement: Teaching Practice - Live Online
If your organisation does not offer online live delivery, Otaquas Training can provide you with a placement that allows you to teach the 20 required online hours.

What are the entry requirements?
In order to complete this qualification, learners are required to:
· Be a minimum of 19 years of age
· Be able to write in English at an appropriate level
· Be working in, or have a placement in a further education organisation. (Please note that you will not be able to complete this qualification teaching children under sixth form level.)

Will I be eligible for QTLS status with this Diploma?
Achieving the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills) will qualify you to apply for the QTLS programme. If you decide to go down the QTLS route on completion, we will support you throughout the process!
